Life's a Beach

Since it was such a gorgeous weekend here, lots of people hit the beach! We spent our Sunday afternoon lounging in the sun at Santa Marinella.

Rome being a city doesn't seem very close to the water, but it's actually incredibly easy to get to the coast! From Trastevere, Termini, Ostiense, or San Pietro station, you can take a train in the direction of Civitavecchia to the Santa Marinella stop [the last one before the end of the line]. It's only about 4 euros each way, and you can buy your ticket on Trenitalia's website or at the station. The ride is about 45 minutes long. The trains run just about every hour so you don't even have to wake up at the crack of dawn and can come home when the sun goes down :)

When we got there, we ambled out of the station and onto the main road. Not really sure of which way to go, we hung a right. The town is so tiny with about one main road that it would have been hard to get lost. Sure enough, after walking only a minute or two, we hit sand! The beach wasn't huge and doesn't have soft white sand, but it is really nice to just spend the day. When beach season really hits, I'm sure it gets crowded. Apparently in Italy you often have to pay for the beach, but Santa Marinella is free.

After reading, napping, playing Farkle, and eating our picnic lunch, we took a short walk along the shore. I've never collected beach glass but my roommate, Alayna, does and we had so much fun finding it. Since there's no rule against glass containers, it's easy to find rememnants of beer and wine bottles. I don't even know how much time we spent searching through the sand and climbing across rocks.

Oh, and since I was at the beach, I couldn't resist building this...

Sun tired and a little crispy [I really should invest in some sunscreen here...], we headed home. I'm sure there are tons of delicious seafood places to eat at, but we're all poor college kids who just spent a lot of money on spring break. We headed back to the train very content with our lazy beach day :)
